Finally, a project that truly only takes 20 minutes! E. has a small waist so her pants are often falling off. I decided to “whip up” a belt for her and I took pictures of the process to create a tutorial for the true beginner. Besides the fact that this is an EASY project, I like that it’s something that I can make for my friends who have little boys (“male” projects are hard to find). I made one in blue ticking fabric leftover from a tote; you could use corduroy or khaki material, etc. The floral belt is from a curtain I found at Goodwill. Make this project unique – use two fabrics, embroider a monogram, embellish with buttons, etc.

Materials:
- Scrap
of fabric 28” L x 3” W (cut up old
corduroys, khakis, and curtains to find great fabrics for your little girl OR
boy) - Thread
- (2)
¾” D rings (hint: the cheapest D rings are on the kiosk with the buttons at
Walmart, though you can also find more expensive, larger ones in the same aisle
as purse notions)
To Make:
- If you haven’t already, cut a length of fabric 28” long by 3” wide (you can easily adjust this for an adult-sized belt). When I have to cut long strips of fabric, I always fold it in half across the shortest end to make the cutting easier.
- Press your strip of fabric lengthwise.
- Fold the raw edges in about ½” on each side (more if you need the strip to be narrower to fit through the belt loops).
- Top stitch the folded seams closed.
- Thread your belt through two D rings and fold the end over twice.
- Top stitch. You may want to turn the needle manually for the first few
stitches, since the fabric will be thick.
- Finish the other end of the belt with a zig zag stitch, or serge the seam (you may want to try the belt on your toddler before doing this so you can cut it down a bit if necessary). For a more finished look, you can also top stitch a coordinating piece of fabric bent around the end of the belt. You can also pinch the raw edges in, and top stitch the opening closed.

Thanks for the directions! My sons are 20 months old and in the 25% for weight and 95% for height. 18 mo shorts/pants are too short and 24 months are too big in the waist.

How simple. It’s like one of those, “why didn’t I think of that?” Type ordeals. Thanks! I have been searching and searching for a belt for my son. Everyone (online shopping) wants an outrageous amount for such a tiny belt. With this idea, I can make several and coordinate with outfits even. Thanks again!!

I love this!!! I’ve been trying to figure out how to make a belt for my 16mths old who is tall but has a small waist. This is perfect! Don’t have to bother with grommets or trying to find a small belt buckle!!!

Love it! Also good font choice. Hey Jack would love one to add to his warddrobe. His would be more for looks than to keep his pant up.

Try making them for adults too!
