Today, my friend Paula taught me to crochet "in the round." Here are the beginnings of my first project: a blanket for E. I am "hooked!" (‘scuse the sorry pun). Finally something I can do while E. is awake!
We spent several hours crocheting and commiserating about our husbands’ deployments. About Baghdad, Mosul, the Sunni Triangle; about how much we miss them, how much we worry, and how we could never have pictured ourselves capable of dealing with this life; about how the stress has stretched us and helped us grow, and how we now have incredible empathy for others.
I wondered out loud if this was what it was like for women in the civil war years – quilting and praying and worrying. Crafting as therapy reminded me of a book recommended to me: The Quilt That Walked to Golden by Sandra Dallas. "The purpose of quilts and the art of quilting provide a window into the lives of these women, their friendships, and their sorrows."

Hello there..I crochet too! It passes the time and my wee little man is having a tendency to ask, “Can you get me some yarn?” It’s too cute. Love your blog! Inspiring. Heartbreaking. Cute. Beautiful!

Creativity & companionship. Awesome. I completed my first crochet project last winter: a warm, woolly, winter cap. I even got a compliment on it when we went skiing last year.
Seems you’re your newfound crafting skills are timely, too. Crocheted fashions are, apparently, very hot this season. Check out this adorable clutch, which I’m sure can be done easily for far less than the $110 they’re asking for it.

Check out how to make “granny squares” — very retro, as they were popular to craft in the 70s to make a wide variety of finished goods.
