[I know, it’s another Toddler E. post – bear with me here; I’m having fun]
Until my mom mentioned it, I’d almost completely forgotten I was once a violinist. And it dawned on me that E. would probably love it. I played her favorite songs, several classical pieces, and two simple Irish jigs. She danced and hopped and twirled and sang (her favorites were "Jingle Bells" and the "So long. Farewell. Auf Wiedershen Adieu" bit from the car commercial). My nails are much too long to be playing and the notes were out of tune and scratchy. But this is what I love about having a two-year old for an audience: she loves it all the same.
We both took a Suzuki bow after our respective performances for Daddy.
And because it’s too much fun not to share, pics from my "Violin Lessons" scrapbook my mom put together when I was little (I was three, and true to Suzuki-training, started with a "violin" made from a wrapped-up Cracker Jacks box and ruler to learn the various positions):
I should point out – our little family was dirt poor most of my younger years. But my mom was incredibly resourceful. She bartered and traded and scraped her pennies and because of it I got violin, dance, and drama lessons (at four, I was the youngest in the community play). It’s amazing how she made so much from so little. I only stuck with the violin, but I had a rich number of experiences to choose from. A lucky little girl.
